Gout Treatment for Foot & Ankle Pain

Sudden, intense pain in a foot joint—especially the big toe—may be a gout attack. Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis associated with uric acid crystals accumulating within a joint.

At Brazos Foot & Ankle, we evaluate sudden and recurring foot joint pain to help determine whether gout or another condition is responsible.

What Does a Gout Attack Feel Like?

Gout frequently affects the joint at the base of the big toe, although other joints can also be involved.

Symptoms may include:

  • Sudden severe joint pain

  • Swelling

  • Redness

  • Warmth

  • Extreme tenderness

  • Difficulty wearing a shoe

  • Pain from even light contact with the affected joint

An attack may begin quickly and can be extremely uncomfortable.

What Causes Gout?

Uric acid is produced as the body breaks down substances called purines. When uric acid levels become elevated, crystals can form in joints and trigger inflammation.

Several factors may influence gout risk, including genetics, kidney function, certain medications, diet, alcohol consumption, dehydration, and other health conditions.

Because multiple problems can cause a red, swollen, painful joint, self-diagnosing gout is not recommended.

Diagnosing Foot Pain

Your provider will examine the painful joint, discuss your symptoms and medical history, and determine whether additional testing is needed.

An accurate diagnosis is particularly important when symptoms are new because infection and other forms of arthritis can sometimes resemble gout.

Managing Gout

Treatment may involve addressing the acute inflammation as well as working with your healthcare providers to reduce the risk of future attacks.

Medication and long-term management recommendations depend on your individual health history. Some patients may also benefit from changes related to hydration, diet, weight management, or other modifiable risk factors.

If gout attacks repeatedly occur, discuss long-term uric acid management with the appropriate healthcare provider.

When Should You Seek Care?

Seek medical attention for sudden severe joint pain, particularly when accompanied by significant redness, warmth, swelling, fever, or illness.

Don't Let Gout Keep You Off Your Feet

A painful big toe can make even a short walk difficult.
