Arch Pain Treatment

Pain through the arch of your foot can turn every step into an uncomfortable one. Arch pain may appear suddenly after increased activity or develop gradually from repeated stress on the muscles, ligaments, and other structures that support your foot.

At Brazos Foot & Ankle, we evaluate arch pain to determine why it is happening and help you find treatment designed around the underlying cause.

What Causes Arch Pain?

Your foot's arch absorbs forces and helps support your body whenever you stand, walk, or run. When those structures become irritated, injured, or overloaded, pain may develop.

Possible causes include:

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • Flat feet or fallen arches

  • High arches

  • Overuse

  • Running or sports injuries

  • Tendon problems

  • Poorly fitting or unsupportive footwear

  • Changes in activity level

  • Abnormal foot mechanics

Some patients experience discomfort directly beneath the arch, while others notice pain extending toward the heel or ball of the foot.

Why an Accurate Diagnosis Matters

Because several conditions can cause arch pain, determining the source of the problem is important before deciding how to treat it.

Your foot and ankle provider can examine where your foot hurts, evaluate your arch structure and movement, and discuss when your symptoms occur. Your footwear, occupation, exercise habits, and previous injuries may also provide useful clues.

Imaging or other testing may be recommended when necessary.

Treatment for Arch Pain

Treatment varies according to the cause and severity of your symptoms.

Depending on your diagnosis, your treatment plan may include rest or temporary activity changes, stretching, supportive shoes, physical therapy, custom orthotics, or other treatments intended to reduce stress on painful structures.

Custom orthotics may be appropriate for some patients when foot mechanics or inadequate support contribute to recurring discomfort.

The objective isn't simply to mask the pain. Identifying factors that place excess stress on the arch can help create a more effective long-term approach.

When Should You Seek Care?

Occasional soreness following an unusually active day may improve with rest. Pain that persists, repeatedly returns, becomes severe, or changes the way you walk should be evaluated.

You should also seek care following an injury or if arch pain is accompanied by significant swelling, bruising, or difficulty bearing weight.

Put Arch Pain Behind You

Your feet support you throughout the day. When your arches hurt, work, exercise, and everyday activities can become more difficult.

At Brazos Foot & Ankle, we'll work to identify what's causing your arch pain and recommend treatment based on your specific needs.
