Ankle Instability & Ankle Pain Treatment

Ankles are built to provide both movement and stability, but an injury or repeated ankle sprains can leave an ankle feeling weak, painful, or unreliable. If your ankle frequently rolls, gives way, swells after activity, or simply doesn’t feel as stable as it once did, you may be dealing with chronic ankle instability.

At Brazos Foot & Ankle, we evaluate ankle pain and instability to determine what’s causing the problem and help you find the right path toward better movement, greater stability, and less discomfort.

Why Does My Ankle Feel Unstable?

Ankle instability often begins with an ankle sprain. When the ligaments that support the ankle are stretched or injured, they may not fully regain their previous strength and stability. Repeated sprains can make the problem worse over time.

Some people notice instability only during exercise or sports, while others may feel their ankle give way while walking, stepping off a curb, or moving across uneven ground.

Common signs of an ankle instability problem may include:

  • Repeated ankle sprains

  • An ankle that frequently rolls or gives way

  • Ongoing pain or tenderness

  • Swelling around the ankle

  • Weakness or a feeling of looseness

  • Difficulty walking or exercising on uneven surfaces

  • Reduced confidence when running, jumping, or changing direction

Persistent ankle symptoms shouldn’t simply become something you learn to live with. An evaluation can help identify the structures involved and whether an underlying injury is contributing to the problem.

Finding the Cause of Ankle Pain & Instability

Not every unstable or painful ankle has the same cause. Your symptoms may be related to damaged or weakened ligaments, a previous fracture, tendon problems, joint damage, arthritis, or another foot and ankle condition.

A foot and ankle evaluation allows your provider to examine your ankle, discuss previous injuries, and assess your range of motion, strength, and stability. When appropriate, imaging or additional testing may be recommended to better understand the source of your symptoms.

Getting an accurate diagnosis is an important first step because treatment should address the cause of the instability, not just the discomfort it creates.

Treatment for Ankle Instability

Treatment depends on the severity of the condition, your activity level, previous injuries, and how much the instability is affecting your everyday life.

Conservative treatment options may include activity modification, supportive footwear, bracing, physical therapy, strengthening exercises, or other treatments designed to improve ankle support and function.

For more significant injuries or chronic instability that does not improve with conservative care, additional treatment options may be considered. Your provider can explain the available approaches and help determine which option is appropriate for your specific condition.

When Should You See a Podiatrist?

Consider scheduling an evaluation if ankle pain continues after an injury, you have experienced multiple ankle sprains, or your ankle regularly feels weak or gives way.

You should also have an ankle injury evaluated if pain or swelling makes it difficult to walk or return to your normal activities.

Addressing recurring ankle problems may help prevent additional injuries and give you greater confidence when walking, working, exercising, or participating in sports.

Take the Next Step Toward a More Stable Ankle

You shouldn’t have to constantly worry about your ankle rolling or giving way.

At Brazos Foot & Ankle, our goal is to identify what’s causing your ankle pain or instability and develop an individualized treatment plan focused on improving comfort, stability, and function.
